On February 12, 1809, naturalist Charles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, England — author of "On the Origin of Species" (1859), the work that established the theory of evolution by natural selection and transformed biology and humanity's understanding of life forever. Curiously, that same day and year Abraham Lincoln was born in a Kentucky log cabin.

On February 12, 1809, Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky — the sixteenth US President who abolished slavery and preserved the Union during the American Civil War. Self-educated, a lawyer and extraordinary orator, Lincoln is considered the greatest president in American history. He was assassinated in 1865 at age 56.

On February 12, 2001, NASA's NEAR Shoemaker probe became the first spacecraft to land on an asteroid, touching down gently on Eros after orbiting the asteroid for a year. The mission provided unique data on the composition and geology of asteroids and paved the way for future exploration and planetary defence missions.
