On May 12, 1820, Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy — the pioneer of modern nursing who during the Crimean War (1853-1856) transformed healthcare for the wounded in Scutari military hospitals, reducing mortality from 42% to 2%. Her ideas on hospital hygiene and nursing care founded nursing as a modern profession. May 12 is International Nurses Day.
On May 12, 2008, a magnitude-7.9 earthquake struck China's Sichuan province, killing nearly 70,000 people and wounding 375,000. The quake destroyed more than 5 million homes and left about 15 million people homeless. The Sichuan earthquake was the deadliest in China since Tangshan in 1976, and the Chinese government's response was closely watched by the international community.
On May 12, 2017, the WannaCry ransomware attacked more than 230,000 computers in 150 countries within hours, locking files and demanding ransoms in Bitcoin. The attack, attributed to North Korea, was the largest coordinated cyberattack in history to that point. It paralysed the British NHS, telecoms companies in Spain and governments worldwide. Damage was estimated at $4 billion.
