🚢1912

On April 14, 1912, at 23:40, the RMS Titanic struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic during its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. The ship — considered unsinkable — split in two and sank in 2 hours and 40 minutes. Some 1,517 of the 2,240 people on board died. The disaster was partly caused by insufficient lifeboats and by sailing at excessive speed in waters with icebergs.

🏛️1865

On April 14, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln was shot by Confederate actor John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C. while watching the play "Our American Cousin". Lincoln died the following morning. The assassination, occurring five days after Lee's surrender at Appomattox, was a devastating blow to the Reconstruction of the South.

🌵1935

On April 14, 1935, the most devastating dust storm of the Dust Bowl — known as "Black Sunday" — struck the southern US prairies, with a black wall of earth more than a kilometre high advancing from northern Texas to Kansas. The Dust Bowl, a combination of drought and poor farming practices, displaced more than 3 million people during the 1930s.
