🇮🇱1948

On May 14, 1948, Zionist leader David Ben-Gurion proclaimed in Tel Aviv the birth of the State of Israel, eleven minutes before the British mandate over Palestine expired. The US recognised the new state eleven minutes later. The following day, five Arab armies invaded Israel. The war of independence that followed established the frontiers of the new state and created the Palestinian refugee problem.

🏛️1607

On May 14, 1607, the first permanent English settlers in North America established the settlement of Jamestown in Virginia — the first successful permanent English settlement on the continent. The colony, financed by the Virginia Company of London, endured years of starvation and conflict with Native peoples before stabilising. It was the embryo of what would become the first American state.

💉1796

On May 14, 1796, English physician Edward Jenner performed the first vaccination in history, inoculating eight-year-old James Phipps with material from the pustules of a milkmaid infected with cowpox. Phipps did not develop smallpox when exposed to it. Jenner's experiment gave birth to vaccinology — the medical branch that has saved the most lives in human history.
