1929

On January 15, 1929, Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia — the leader of the African American civil rights movement who transformed American society. With his philosophy of non-violence inspired by Gandhi, King organised the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the March on Washington and the "I Have a Dream" speech (1963). He was assassinated in 1968 at age 39.

On January 15, 2001, Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger launched Wikipedia, the collaborative online encyclopedia that allowed any user in the world to create and edit articles. What began as a complementary project to the expert encyclopedia Nupedia became the largest encyclopedia in history, with more than 60 million articles in 300 languages and 1.7 billion monthly visitors.

✈️2009

On January 15, 2009, pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger made an emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River in New York after both engines were disabled by a bird strike. All 155 occupants survived without fatalities. The landing was called the "Miracle on the Hudson" and Sullenberger became an American national hero.
