On June 15, 1215, King John I of England signed the Magna Carta at Runnymede — the first document in history to limit the power of the king and introduce the principle that everyone — even the monarch — was subject to the law. The Magna Carta established the seed of habeas corpus, the right to a fair trial and representation before taxation — the foundation of the modern rule of law.

1752

On June 15, 1752, American inventor and politician Benjamin Franklin conducted his famous kite experiment during a thunderstorm, attaching a metal key to the kite string to demonstrate that lightning was electricity. The experiment led him to invent the lightning rod, which spread rapidly through Europe and America. Franklin is the only Founding Father of the US who was never president.

🎓1994

On June 15, 1994, South African President Nelson Mandela visited for the first time as head of state Robben Island Prison, where he had been imprisoned for 18 years. The visit, which had an enormous symbolic impact, took place just weeks after his inauguration as the first Black president of South Africa. The island was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
