🚢1912

On April 16, 1912, the RMS Titanic sank in the North Atlantic at 2:20 a.m. (local time), with the loss of 1,517 lives. News of the sinking began reaching the international press that day. The tragedy prompted the creation of the SOLAS Convention (Safety of Life at Sea) and the founding of the International Ice Patrol Service.

🧪1943

On April 16, 1943, Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann accidentally discovered the hallucinogenic effects of LSD-25 (lysergic acid diethylamide) that he himself had synthesised in 1938. The following day, he took a deliberate dose and made his legendary "Bicycle Day" cycling home. LSD would become central to the psychedelic culture of the 1960s and an object of therapeutic research.

On April 16, 1889, actor and filmmaker Charles Chaplin was born in Walworth, London — who became the greatest artist of silent cinema and the first global idol of the seventh art. His character the "Tramp" (Charlot) with the little moustache, bowler hat and cane is one of the most recognisable icons in human history. His film "The Great Dictator" (1940) was the first political satire in cinema.
