On August 16, 1977, Elvis Presley was found dead at his Graceland mansion in Memphis, aged 42. The autopsy cited cardiac arrest caused by prescription drug abuse. Considered the King of Rock and Roll, he had sold more than one billion records and irreversibly transformed twentieth-century popular music.
On August 16, 1940, the Luftwaffe launched one of its most intense attacks on Britain during the Battle of Britain, with more than 1,700 combat sorties in a single day. The RAF held on at enormous cost to both sides. Churchill immortalised the pilots' sacrifice with the words: "Never was so much owed by so many to so few."
On August 16, 1960, Cyprus proclaimed its independence from the United Kingdom after decades of anti-colonial struggle led by the EOKA organisation. The Mediterranean island, with a population divided between Greeks and Turks, was born as an independent republic under Archbishop Makarios III. Ethnic division would lead to the de facto partition of the country in 1974.
