On October 17, 1961, the Paris police massacred Algerian protesters demonstrating peacefully against the curfew imposed specifically on them. The death toll, concealed for decades, is estimated between 40 and 300. It is one of the most serious crimes committed on French soil in peacetime and was not acknowledged by the French state until 1998.
