⛓️1865

On June 19, 1865, enslaved people in Texas finally learned of the abolition of slavery, proclaimed by President Lincoln on January 1, 1863 with the Emancipation Proclamation, but which took two years to reach Texas due to the limited federal presence. The date became a celebration of the African American community — "Juneteenth" — and was declared a federal holiday in the US in 2021.

On June 19, 1961, Kuwait gained independence from the British Protectorate that had controlled it since 1899. The small emirate, governed by the Al-Sabah family, would become one of the world's wealthiest countries thanks to its oil reserves. In 1990, Saddam Hussein's Iraqi invasion triggered the First Gulf War, which concluded with the restoration of Kuwaiti sovereignty in 1991.

On June 19, 1867, Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico — the Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian that Napoleon III had imposed as sovereign of Mexico — was executed by firing squad on the Cerro de las Campanas in Querétaro. His death, ordered by President Benito Juárez, ended the Second Mexican Empire and was immortalised by painter Édouard Manet in several versions of "The Execution of Emperor Maximilian".
