🇹🇷1919

On May 19, 1919, Turkish general Mustafa Kemal landed in Samsun on the Black Sea coast, starting the Turkish War of Independence against the Allied and Greek occupation following the Ottoman defeat in World War I. May 19 is Commemoration of Atatürk and Youth and Sports Day in Turkey. Kemal, known from 1934 as Atatürk ("Father of the Turks"), founded the Turkish Republic in 1923.

On May 19, 1536, Anne Boleyn, second wife of King Henry VIII of England, was beheaded at the Tower of London, accused of adultery, incest and high treason. The accusation was almost certainly false. Henry VIII, who had broken with the Catholic Church in order to marry her, had her executed when she failed to give him a male heir. Her daughter, Princess Elizabeth, would become Queen Elizabeth I.

🇨🇳1989

On May 19, 1989, Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Zhao Ziyang made an emotional visit to the hunger-striking students in Tiananmen Square in Beijing and told them: "We have come too late". It was his last public appearance. Days later he was removed from power and kept under house arrest for the rest of his life. On May 20 martial law was declared and on June 4 came the bloody crackdown.
