🇦🇷1982

On April 2, 1982, Argentine armed forces invaded the Falkland Islands, starting the Falklands War with the United Kingdom. The dictatorship of General Galtieri hoped for a quick victory to strengthen his regime. However, the British Task Force recovered the islands after 74 days of fighting. ✝️2005

On April 2, 2005, Pope John Paul II died in the Vatican at age 84, after a pontificate of 26 years and 5 months — the third longest in history. The Polish pope Karol Wojtyla, who made a decisive contribution to the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, was beatified in 2011 and canonised in 2014. His death was followed by millions of people worldwide.

🎨1840

On April 2, 1840, Impressionist painter Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, France — known for his luminous depictions of everyday life, joy and feminine sensuality. His works — "Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette", "The Large Bathers", "Luncheon of the Boating Party" — are peaks of Impressionism and among the most popular paintings in the world. Renoir continued painting with brushes tied to his arthritic hands until the day he died.
