🇲🇹1964

On September 21, 1964, Malta gained independence from the United Kingdom after 164 years of colonial rule, becoming a sovereign state within the Commonwealth. The small Mediterranean island, home of the Order of Malta for centuries, had been key to control of the Mediterranean and was collectively awarded the George Cross for its resistance during World War II.

📖1937

On September 21, 1937, publisher George Allen & Unwin published The Hobbit, the first novel by J.R.R. Tolkien set in Middle-earth. The book, originally conceived as a story for his children, was an immediate success and led the publisher to commission Tolkien for a sequel that would become The Lord of the Rings.
