History also happened on this day

🌍1970

On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was held, convened by US Senator Gaylord Nelson after witnessing the damage from the Santa Barbara oil spill in 1969. Some 20 million Americans took to the streets. The event drove the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and key environmental protection laws. Today Earth Day is the largest civic event in the world.

🎨1724

On April 22, 1724, philosopher Immanuel Kant was born in Königsberg, Prussia — whose Critique of Pure Reason (1781) is considered one of the most influential works in the history of Western philosophy. Kant synthesised rationalism and empiricism, established the conditions of human knowledge and formulated the categorical imperative as the foundation of ethics. He led such a regular life that citizens set their clocks by his walks.

🌿1994

On April 22, 1994, former US President Richard Nixon died in Yorba Linda, California, at age 81. Nixon, the only president to resign in American history, did so in 1974 due to the Watergate scandal. However, his foreign policy — the opening to China (1972), détente with the USSR and the end of the Vietnam War — is considered by many historians as one of the most impactful legacies of the Cold War.
