December 22 has no owner yet

On December 22, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge, German General Heinrich von Lüttwitz demanded the surrender of Bastogne, a strategically vital Belgian town, from American General Anthony McAuliffe. McAuliffe responded with a single word: "Nuts!" The refusal and subsequent resistance became one of the most heroic episodes in American military history.

On December 22, 1894, Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a French army officer of Jewish origin, was convicted of treason in a trial riddled with irregularities and antisemitism. The Dreyfus Affair divided France for a decade and triggered the founding of the Zionist movement by Theodor Herzl, who covered the trial as a journalist and concluded that Jews needed their own state.

On December 22, 1887, mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan was born in Erode, India — one of the most extraordinary geniuses in the history of mathematics. Self-taught without formal university training, he discovered thousands of advanced mathematical formulas, many of which were not proven until decades after his premature death at the age of 32.
