On January 22, 1973, the US Supreme Court ruled in Roe v. Wade that the constitutional right to privacy encompassed a woman's right to decide on abortion, legalising it nationwide. The ruling was one of the most controversial in American history and was overturned in June 2022 by Dobbs v. Jackson, returning the issue to individual states.

On January 22, 1901, Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom died at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, after 63 years and 7 months on the throne — the longest reign in British history up to that point. Her death marked the end of the Victorian Era, a period of enormous imperial expansion, industrialisation and social change. She was succeeded by her son Edward VII, aged 59.

On January 22, 1918, the Central Rada of Ukraine proclaimed the Ukrainian People's Republic as an independent state from Russia, just months after the October Revolution. The independence was short-lived: in 1920, the Red Army incorporated Ukraine into the Soviet Union, where it would remain until 1991. January 22 is Unity Day in Ukraine.
