On May 22, 1992, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) came into force — the first internationally binding treaty for the protection of the planet's biodiversity. Signed by 168 countries, the convention establishes three objectives: conservation of biological diversity, sustainable use of its components, and fair sharing of benefits derived from it. May 22 is International Day for Biological Diversity.
On May 22, 1813, composer Richard Wagner was born in Leipzig, Germany — who revolutionised opera with his music dramas — The Ring of the Nibelung, Tristan und Isolde, Parsifal — where music, text, stage and philosophy fuse into a total work of art (Gesamtkunstwerk). His ideas on music and theatre influenced not only opera but cinema, literature and twentieth-century thought.
On May 22, 2010, Air India Express crashed its flight IX 812 during landing at Mangaluru airport, India, falling off a cliff and killing 158 of the 166 people on board. The captain was asleep in the cockpit. The accident was the worst in Indian aviation history and drove reforms in pilot working standards in India.
