October 22 has no owner yet

On October 22, 1962, President Kennedy announced on television the naval blockade of Cuba and the existence of Soviet missiles on the island, informing the world that it stood on the brink of nuclear war. The seventeen-minute speech was watched by millions of people in terror. The thirteen days of the Cuban Missile Crisis were the most dangerous of the Cold War.

On October 22, 1797, French physicist André-Jacques Garnerin made the first parachute jump in history from a hot air balloon at about 900 metres altitude over the Parc Monceau in Paris. Garnerin landed safely, though the oscillation of the parachute made him dizzy during the descent. It was the birth of a technique that would save millions of lives.

On October 22, 1975, the Soviet probe Venera 9 landed on Venus, becoming the first spacecraft to transmit images from the surface of another planet. The photographs revealed a rocky, angular landscape, very different from what had been expected. The probe survived just 53 minutes before being destroyed by the planet's extreme conditions.
