On March 23, 1983, US President Ronald Reagan announced the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), popularly known as "Star Wars" — an ambitious and technologically questionable programme to build a space-based missile shield. The announcement intensified the arms race with the USSR and imposed enormous costs on both superpowers, being one of the factors in the Soviet collapse.
On March 23, 1940, the Muslim League of India passed the Lahore Resolution, calling for the creation of independent states for Muslims in the northwestern and northeastern regions of the subcontinent. This resolution was the political starting point that led to the creation of Pakistan in 1947. March 23 is celebrated today as Pakistan Day.
On March 23, 1950, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) was established by the UN as the specialised agency to coordinate international meteorological observations and services. The WMO, headquartered in Geneva, today plays a central role in monitoring climate change, predicting extreme weather events and managing meteorological alerts at a global scale.
