History also happened on this day
On June 24, 1314, the Scottish army of King Robert I Bruce decisively defeated the English army of King Edward II at the Battle of Bannockburn — the greatest military victory in Scottish history. The battle, in which the Scots used "schiltron" pike formations to resist the English cavalry, secured the independence of Scotland recognised in the Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton (1328).
On June 24, 1947, American pilot Kenneth Arnold reported seeing nine bright disc-shaped flying objects over Mount Rainier, Washington, giving birth to the term "flying saucer" — though Arnold actually described their motion, not their shape — and to the modern UFO (unidentified flying object) phenomenon. Since then, UFO sightings have multiplied across the world.
On June 24, 1821, Simón Bolívar's army defeated Spanish forces at the Battle of Carabobo, securing the independence of Venezuela. The battle, fought on the Venezuelan plains, was one of the most decisive in the Latin American wars of independence. June 24 is today Venezuelan Army Day in commemoration of this definitive victory.
