🌹1974

On April 25, 1974, in Portugal, the army staged the Carnation Revolution, peacefully overthrowing the Estado Novo dictatorship established by António de Oliveira Salazar in 1933. Soldiers wore red carnations in their rifle barrels as a sign of peace. The revolution ended the colonial wars in Angola, Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau and restored democracy to Portugal after 41 years of authoritarian rule.

🧬1953

On April 25, 1953, the journal Nature published the article by James Watson and Francis Crick describing the double helix structure of DNA — the discovery that revolutionised biology and medicine. The barely one-page article contained the understated sentence: "It has not escaped our notice that the specific pairing we have postulated immediately suggests a possible copying mechanism for the genetic material".

🇦🇺1915

On April 25, 1915, the ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) forces landed at Gallipoli (Turkey) in the failed Allied campaign against the Ottoman Empire. The eight months of fighting cost the lives of more than 11,000 Australian and New Zealand soldiers. ANZAC Day — April 25 — is the most solemn day in the national calendar of Australia and New Zealand.
