On March 26, 1827, German composer Ludwig van Beethoven died in Vienna at age 56 — deaf for years yet able to compose some of his most sublime works in that state, including the Ninth Symphony with the Ode to Joy, which he never heard. His music, spanning from Classicism to Romanticism, is considered the summit of Western symphonic music.
On March 26, 1971, Bangladesh declared its independence from Pakistan, triggering the Bangladesh Liberation War. The Pakistani army responded with brutal repression that caused between 300,000 and 3 million deaths. With India's support, Bangladesh defeated Pakistan and was recognised as an independent nation on December 16, 1971. March 26 is Bangladesh Independence Day.
On March 26, 1979, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat signed the Egypt–Israel Peace Treaty in Washington D.C. — the first between Israel and an Arab state. The agreement, mediated by President Carter and based on the 1978 Camp David Accords, returned the Sinai to Egypt and was the beginning of Arab-Israeli normalisation.
