On April 27, 1994, South Africa held its first multiracial elections — the day millions of Black citizens were able to vote for the first time in their history. Images of long queues of citizens waiting to vote went around the world. April 27 is today Freedom Day in South Africa — the national holiday commemorating the end of apartheid and the birth of democracy.
On April 27, 1521, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan was killed at the Battle of Mactan in Cebu, Philippines, by the forces of local king Lapulapu. Magellan, who commanded the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe, died without seeing it completed. The expedition, initially comprising 5 ships and 270 men, returned to Spain in 1522 with a single ship and 18 survivors under Elcano.
On April 27, 1667, blind English poet John Milton signed the sale contract for his epic poem "Paradise Lost" for ten pounds sterling. The work, considered the greatest epic in the English language, narrates the fall of the angel Lucifer and the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise according to the Book of Genesis. Milton dictated the poem to his daughter because he had lost his sight years earlier.
