On March 29, 2004, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia joined NATO in the largest expansion of the Alliance since its founding. The accession of former Soviet countries to the Atlantic Alliance was seen as a security guarantee against Russia and symbolically marked the end of the Cold War in Eastern Europe.
On March 29, 1871, the Royal Albert Hall in London was inaugurated — one of the most famous theatres and concert halls in the world, funded partly from the profits of the Great Exhibition of 1851. The venue, named in honour of Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, holds 5,500 people and has hosted everything from Beatles concerts to the BBC Proms.
On March 29, 1561, Spanish captain Juan de Oñate founded the town of Nombre de Dios in present-day Mexico, one of the first permanent settlements in the north of New Spain. Spanish colonisation of northern Mexico and the present-day US Southwest laid the foundations of a Hispanic cultural identity that persists in that region to this day.
