🏔️1953

On May 29, 1953, at 11:30 a.m., New Zealand climber Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Mount Everest (8,849 m), becoming the first human beings to stand at the highest point on Earth. Hillary took a photograph of Norgay at the summit, but not vice versa: "I was too busy taking the picture". The conquest of Everest was the greatest alpine triumph of the twentieth century.

On May 29, 1453, the Ottoman forces of Sultan Mehmed II entered Constantinople after a 53-day siege, ending the Byzantine Empire — heir to the Eastern Roman Empire — which had lasted more than 1,000 years. Sultan "The Conqueror" converted the Hagia Sophia Basilica into a mosque. The fall of Constantinople conventionally marks the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Renaissance.

On May 29, 1917, John Fitzgerald KennedyJFK — was born in Brookline, Massachusetts — the thirty-fifth President of the US (1961-1963) and the youngest elected in American history. His presidency, marked by the Cuban Missile Crisis, the space race and the civil rights movement, ended with his assassination on November 22, 1963 in Dallas — the most traumatic event in contemporary American history.
