On August 4, 1914, the United Kingdom declared war on Germany following the German invasion of neutral Belgium, completing the entry of the great powers into World War I. With that declaration, the conflict ceased to be European and became truly global, drawing in the vast British and French colonial empires as well.
On August 4, 1789, the French National Constituent Assembly abolished the feudal system in a historic session known as the Night of August 4th. Nobles voluntarily renounced their privileges, eliminating centuries of serfdom, tithes and manorial justice. It was one of the most radical acts of the French Revolution.
On August 4, 1962, Jamaica proclaimed its independence from the United Kingdom, becoming the first territory in the English-speaking Caribbean to do so. The island, known worldwide for reggae music and as the birthplace of Bob Marley, had been a British colony for more than three centuries.
