On June 5, 1972, the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment opened in Stockholm — the first international summit on the state of the planet. It gave rise to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and established June 5 as World Environment Day. The conference laid the foundations of modern international environmental law.
On June 5, 1968, Senator Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, hours after winning the California primary in his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination. The assassin was Sirhan Sirhan, a Palestinian immigrant. The death of Bobby Kennedy, brother of the assassinated president, was one more blow in the traumatic year 1968 for the United States.
On June 5, 1967, Israel launched a pre-emptive air strike against the armed forces of Egypt, Jordan and Syria, destroying most of their air forces on the ground within hours. In six days, Israel conquered the Sinai, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights. The Six-Day War radically transformed the map of the Middle East and the Arab-Israeli conflict.
