🌍1953

On March 5, 1953, Joseph Stalin, Secretary General of the Communist Party of the USSR for 29 years, died. Under his rule, the USSR industrialised, defeated Nazi Germany and became a nuclear superpower, but his policies cost the lives of between 6 and 20 million people in the gulags, forced collectivisations and political purges. His death opened the process of de-Stalinisation.

🗣️1946

On March 5, 1946, former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill delivered at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, the speech in which he coined the term "Iron Curtain" to describe the dividing line between free Europe and Soviet-dominated Europe. The speech, which Stalin called a declaration of war, is considered the official beginning of the Cold War.

⚖️1770

On March 5, 1770, British soldiers opened fire on a crowd of colonists in Boston, killing five people, in the episode known as the Boston Massacre. Lawyer John Adams — future president — defended the soldiers at trial and secured their acquittal.
