On November 5, 1605, English authorities discovered and foiled the Gunpowder Plot, a conspiracy to blow up the Parliament of London during the opening of the session with King James I present. Guy Fawkes was arrested guarding 36 barrels of gunpowder in the cellars of the building. November 5 is celebrated in the UK as Bonfire Night.
On November 8, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan — the most powerful typhoon ever recorded at landfall — struck the Philippines with winds of up to 315 km/h. The disaster killed more than 6,300 people, left four million displaced and destroyed the city of Tacloban. The catastrophe accelerated the international debate on climate change and natural disasters.
On October 27, 1604, astronomer Johannes Kepler made his last observation of Kepler's Nova, the most recent supernova visible to the naked eye in the Milky Way. The star shone in the sky for more than a year with a brightness comparable to the brightest planets, and its observation helped refute the Aristotelian theory of the immutability of the heavens.
