🏅1896

On April 6, 1896, the first modern Olympic Games opened in Athens, with 241 athletes from 14 countries participating. The games were organised by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who conceived them as an instrument of peace and international understanding inspired by the Games of Antiquity. American athletics dominated the competition, but the most celebrated triumph was that of Greek marathon runner Spyros Louis.

🇺🇸1917

On April 6, 1917, the US Congress declared war on the German Empire, marking America's entry into World War I. The decision came following Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare attacks and the revelation of the Zimmermann Telegram, in which Germany proposed an alliance with Mexico against the US. The arrival of American troops definitively tipped the balance towards the Allies.

🇷🇼1994

On April 6, 1994, the plane of Rwanda's President Juvénal Habyarimana was shot down over Kigali, triggering the Rwandan Genocide. Over the following 100 days, Hutu extremists massacred between 500,000 and 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus with machetes and firearms. The international community, traumatised by Somalia, did not intervene. The genocide was the greatest humanitarian catastrophe of the 1990s.
