On August 6, 1945, the American bomber Enola Gay dropped the atomic bomb Little Boy on Hiroshima, instantly killing between 70,000 and 80,000 people. It was the first use of a nuclear weapon in history. The total death toll, including radiation effects in the following months, exceeded 140,000 people.

🌍1825

On August 6, 1825, the Congress of Bolivia proclaimed the country's independence, adopting the name of its liberator, Simón Bolívar. Bolivia was the last major territory of the former Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata to gain independence, and its birth completed the map of the new South American republics.

🚀2007

On August 6, 2007, NASA launched the Phoenix probe toward Mars, with the goal of studying the planet's arctic soil for conditions that might have once harboured microbial life. In May 2008 it successfully landed on the northern polar plain and confirmed the presence of water ice beneath the Martian surface.
