On March 7, 1965, 600 African American demonstrators marching from Selma to Montgomery to demand voting rights were brutally beaten by state troopers at Alabama's Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the episode known as "Bloody Sunday". Television images of the attack shocked the nation and precipitated the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

On March 7, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell obtained the patent for the telephone — the invention that would transform human communications more radically than any other until the advent of the internet. Three days later, Bell made the first telephone call in history, telling his assistant Watson: "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you". The parentage of the invention remains historically disputed.

On March 7, 1850, US Senator Daniel Webster delivered his Seventh of March Speech in the Senate, supporting the Compromise of 1850 and the Fugitive Slave Law, in an attempt to avert civil war. The speech cost him his reputation in the abolitionist North but postponed the conflict. His stance was condemned by abolitionists, including poet John Greenleaf Whittier in his poem "Ichabod".
