On April 8, 563 BC, according to Buddhist tradition, Siddhartha Gautama — the Buddha — was born in Lumbini, in present-day Nepal. The Kshatriya prince renounced his life of luxury to seek spiritual enlightenment and, after years of meditation, achieved nirvana under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India.
