On May 8, 1945 — VE-Day (Victory in Europe Day) — the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany came into force, ending World War II in Europe after six years of conflict that caused between 70 and 85 million deaths. In the streets of London, Paris, New York and Moscow, millions of people celebrated the end of the most destructive war in human history.

On May 8, 1828, philanthropist Henry Dunant was born in Geneva, Switzerland — he who founded the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in 1863 after witnessing the Battle of Solferino (1859) and its devastating human cost. His efforts led to the signing of the Geneva Convention of 1864, which establishes international humanitarian law. Dunant received the first Nobel Peace Prize in history in 1901.

On May 8, 1886, pharmacist John Stith Pemberton mixed for the first time in Atlanta, Georgia, the ingredients of a drink he called Coca-Cola, initially designed as a headache remedy and containing small amounts of cocaine. His bookkeeper Frank Robinson invented the name and logo. In just over a century, Coca-Cola would become the most recognised product on the planet.
