On December 9, 1948, the UN General Assembly approved the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide — the first international human rights treaty in history. Adopted one day before the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the convention defined genocide as an international crime for the first time and required its prosecution and punishment.
On December 9, 1968, engineer Douglas Engelbart presented in San Francisco what is known as the "Mother of All Demos": in 90 minutes he live-demonstrated the computer mouse, word processing, email, video conferencing and hypertext. All these inventions became the foundation of modern computing as we know it.
On December 9, 1991, Kazakhstan declared independence from the Soviet Union, one of the last Soviet territories to do so before the formal dissolution of the USSR on December 25. Kazakhstan, the world's ninth-largest country, is rich in oil and natural gas and has since been governed by the same political party without genuinely competitive elections.
