On August 1, 1914, Germany declared war on Russia, setting in motion the alliance system that within four days would turn a regional conflict into World War I. The declaration followed a German ultimatum and Russia's general mobilisation, and marked the point of no return toward the largest armed conflict the world had yet seen.
On August 1, 1981, MTV launched as the first television channel dedicated exclusively to music videos. Its very first broadcast was Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles. On August 1, 1291, the cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden signed the Federal Charter, the founding document of the Swiss Confederation.
