On August 11, 1960, Chad proclaimed its independence from France, becoming one of numerous African countries to achieve sovereignty that same year. Landlocked and situated at the heart of the continent, Chad has been since independence one of Africa's most challenging countries in terms of development and political stability.
On August 11, 1999, the last total solar eclipse of the twentieth century took place, visible across central Europe, Turkey and India. Millions of people took to the streets to watch it live, making it the most widely observed eclipse in history up to that point. The path of totality crossed Europe from west to east in just under an hour.
On August 12, 1960, NASA launched Echo 1, the first passive communications satellite in history. It was essentially a silvered balloon 30 metres in diameter that bounced radio signals between points on Earth. Visible to the naked eye from the ground, Echo 1 was also the first artificial satellite seen by millions of people worldwide.
