On January 12, 2010, a devastating magnitude 7.0 earthquake destroyed Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, and its surroundings. Between 100,000 and 316,000 people died in the deadliest disaster in the Western Hemisphere. The earthquake affected 3 million people and collapsed a country that was already the poorest in the Americas. The international humanitarian response was the largest to that date.
On January 12, 1964, a revolution overthrew the Sultan of Zanzibar in a night of violence that killed thousands of people, mainly of Arab origin. The revolution paved the way for the unification of Zanzibar and Tanganyika into Tanzania on April 26 of that same year. Zanzibar retained considerable autonomy within the new united republic.
On January 12, 2003, scientists from the International Human Genome Consortium announced they had completed the Human Genome Project, the sequencing of the complete human DNA. The project, begun in 1990 with an investment of $3 billion, opened a new era in personalised medicine, pharmacology and the understanding of genetic diseases.
