On November 12, 1970, General Hafez al-Assad seized power in Syria through a bloodless coup, beginning a dictatorship that would last thirty years and that his son Bashar al-Assad inherited in 2000. The Assad regime, backed by the Baath party, has shaped Syria's recent history, including the devastating civil war that began in 2011.
On November 12, 1927, Leon Trotsky was expelled from the Communist Party of the USSR by Stalin, beginning his definitive exile. Trotsky, one of the principal architects of the October Revolution, was deported in 1929 and finally murdered by a Stalinist agent in Mexico in 1940 with an ice axe. His expulsion symbolised Stalin's definitive triumph over Lenin's rivals.
On November 12, 2014, the ESA's Rosetta probe successfully deployed the Philae lander on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, making it the first time in history that a spacecraft had landed on a comet. Although Philae bounced twice before coming to rest, it transmitted scientifically valuable data.
