On July 13, 1985, Live Aid — the greatest charity concert in history — was held simultaneously at Wembley Stadium in London and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, with performances by Queen, U2, David Bowie and Madonna, among others. Watched by 1.9 billion people in 150 countries, the event raised more than $125 million for victims of the famine in Ethiopia.
On July 13, 1878, the Congress of Berlin concluded with the signing of the Treaty of Berlin, redrawing the map of the Balkans after the Russo-Turkish War. The treaty recognised the independence of Serbia, Montenegro and Romania, created the new autonomous Bulgaria and gave Austria-Hungary the administration of Bosnia-Herzegovina. The unresolved tensions led in 1914 to World War I.
On June 28, 2006, Montenegro was admitted as the 192nd member state of the United Nations, having declared independence from Serbia on June 3 of that same year. Montenegrin independence was the final split in the dissolution process of the former Yugoslavia, which began in 1991. July 13 is Statehood Day in Montenegro.
