On March 13, 1881, Tsar Alexander II of Russia was assassinated in St Petersburg by a bomb thrown by members of the terrorist organisation Narodnaya Volya ("The People's Will"). His assassination halted the reform process and hardened the regime under his successor Alexander III.

He is the first Latin American pope in history, the first Jesuit and the first to adopt the name of Francis of Assisi.
