March 14 has no owner yet

On March 14, 1879, physicist Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany — he who revolutionised physics with the special theory of relativity (1905) and general relativity (1915). His equation E=mc² established the equivalence of mass and energy. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921 for explaining the photoelectric effect. He fled Nazi Germany in 1933 and worked in the US until his death in 1955.

March 14 is Pi Day (3/14, like the first digits of π = 3.14...), celebrated since 1988 when physicist Larry Shaw organised the first celebration at the Exploratorium Museum in San Francisco. The number π (pi) is the ratio between the circumference and diameter of a circle and is one of the most important irrational numbers in mathematics. It also happens to be Einstein's birthday.

On March 14, 1757, British Admiral John Byng was executed aboard his ship in Portsmouth harbour for failing to fight with sufficient vigour at the Battle of Minorca against the French. He was the only British admiral executed in wartime for cowardice. Writer Voltaire immortalised the episode in Candide with the line "in this country it is wise to kill an admiral from time to time".
