On September 14, 1959, the Soviet probe Luna 2 impacted the surface of the Moon, becoming the first human-made object to reach another celestial body. The probe carried pennants bearing the Soviet emblem. The achievement came just two years after Sputnik and demonstrated the growing space capability of the USSR.
On September 14, 1812, Napoleon's army entered Moscow after the Battle of Borodino, expecting Russian surrender. Instead, they found the city almost empty and ablaze: the Russians themselves had set it on fire. Without quarters or supplies, trapped by the approaching winter, Napoleon began a catastrophic retreat that would mark the beginning of his downfall.
