🇲🇽1810

In the early hours of September 16, 1810, priest Miguel Hidalgo rang the bell of the church of Dolores and delivered the Cry of Independence, calling the Mexican people to rise up against Spanish rule. The movement he started would lead eleven years later to the independence of Mexico. The night of September 15 is celebrated each year with the Cry of Independence.

🇪🇹1974

On September 12, 1974, an Ethiopian military junta known as the Derg deposed Emperor Haile Selassie I, ending nearly three thousand years of monarchy in Ethiopia. Selassie, who had ruled for more than forty years and was venerated as a messianic figure by the Rastafari movement, died in military custody the following year.

🌎1821

On September 15, 1821, five Central American provinces — Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica — simultaneously proclaimed their independence from the Spanish Empire. The declaration was signed in Guatemala City and marked the birth of what are today five independent nations. The date is Independence Day in all these countries.
