🇧🇷1889

On November 15, 1889, Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca led a coup that overthrew Emperor Pedro II and proclaimed the Republic of Brazil, ending 67 years of monarchy. The transition was surprisingly peaceful: Pedro II himself departed for exile in Europe without resistance. November 15 is celebrated as Republic Day in Brazil.

On November 15, 1884, the West Africa Conference opened in Berlin, convened by Chancellor Bismarck, at which European powers divided up the African continent without consulting its inhabitants. The so-called "Scramble for Africa" drew artificial borders that ignored ethnicities and cultures, sowing the conflicts that persist on the continent to this day.

🇨🇩1908

On November 15, 1908, the Congo Free State was transferred by Belgian King Leopold II to the government of Belgium, becoming the Belgian Congo. Leopold II's personal regime had caused between 1 and 10 million deaths and mass mutilations. International pressure and Edmund Morel's humanitarian campaign forced the transfer of the colony to the Belgian state.
