On May 16, 1929, the first Academy Awards ceremony of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles. The ceremony lasted just 15 minutes. Best Picture went to "Wings" (1927). The name "Oscar" for the golden statuette became popular in the 1930s. Today the Oscars are the most-watched entertainment awards in the world.
On May 16, 1966, the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party approved the document that launched the Cultural Revolution — the radical political movement with which Mao Zedong sought to purge revisionists from the party and mobilise youth into the Red Guards. Over ten years, the Cultural Revolution caused between 500,000 and 2 million deaths and devastated Chinese culture, education and the economy.
On May 16, 1763, Scottish writer James Boswell met essayist and lexicographer Samuel Johnson in a London bookshop, beginning a friendship that would give rise to the Life of Johnson (1791) — considered the greatest biography in the English language and the model for all modern biographies. Johnson, author of the first complete English dictionary, dominated eighteenth-century London literary life.
