⚖️1954

On May 17, 1954, the US Supreme Court issued the ruling Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, declaring racial segregation in American public schools unconstitutional, overturning the "separate but equal" doctrine established in Plessy v. Ferguson (1896). The ruling, written by Chief Justice Earl Warren, was the legal starting point of the civil rights movement.

On May 17, 2004, the state of Massachusetts became the first in the US to legalise same-sex marriage, following the Goodridge v. Department of Public Health ruling by the Massachusetts Supreme Court. The first couple to marry was Julie Goodridge and Hillary Goodridge, who had led the legal case. Twelve years later, in 2015, the federal Supreme Court extended the right across the entire US.

2000

On May 17, 2000, Real Madrid won the Champions League for the eighth time, defeating Valencia 3-0 in the Paris final. Goals from Steve McManaman — with one of the finest in the competition's history — Raúl and Morientes sealed the victory. It was the beginning of the era of great European titles for Madrid under President Florentino Pérez.
