On July 2, 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act, prohibiting discrimination on grounds of race, colour, religion, sex or national origin. The law, driven by the movement led by Martin Luther King Jr., legally ended racial segregation in the United States. Johnson reportedly commented upon signing: "We have lost the South for a generation."

On July 2, 1863, the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg was the bloodiest of the engagement: the Confederates attacked both flanks of the Union line in epic fighting at places such as Little Round Top, the Wheat Field and the Peach Orchard. The Union army barely held on, laying the groundwork for the decisive victory that would be completed the following day.

On July 2, 1937, pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan disappeared over the Pacific Ocean while attempting to circumnavigate the world along the equator. Earhart was already the first woman to cross the Atlantic solo. Her disappearance, despite a massive search, was never solved and remains one of aviation's greatest mysteries.
