On May 2, 1519, Leonardo da Vinci died at the Château du Clos Lucé, Amboise, France, at age 67, in the arms of King Francis I of France, who had invited him to spend his final years at the French court. Leonardo died surrounded by his notebooks, his inventions and his paintings, including the Gioconda. He is considered the most complete human being who ever lived.

On May 2, 2011, American special forces (SEAL Team 6) killed Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden at his hideout in Abbottabad, Pakistan, ten years after the September 11 attacks. President Obama followed the operation live from the Situation Room of the White House. Bin Laden's body was buried at sea in the Arabian Sea. The news was celebrated in the streets of the US.

On May 2, 1945, Soviet forces completed the capture of Berlin, raising the red flag over the Reichstag. The Battle of Berlin, which lasted two weeks, was one of the bloodiest in the European theatre: more than 100,000 Soviet soldiers and between 100,000 and 150,000 German defenders died. The fall of the Third Reich's capital marked the effective end of World War II in Europe.
