On May 3, 1791, the Polish Diet approved the Constitution of May 3rd — considered the first written and codified constitution in Europe and the second in the modern world after the American one of 1787. The constitution established parliamentary monarchy, abolished the privileges of the nobility and extended rights to the middle class. It was annulled by neighbouring powers who partitioned Poland shortly after.

On May 3, 1978, the first unsolicited email in history — the first spam — was sent to 393 users of the ARPANET network to promote new computers from the DEC company. The author was Gary Thuerk, a company employee. The reaction was one of general outrage. More than 45 years later, spam accounts for more than 45% of global email traffic.

On May 3, 1951, the Cannes Film Festival opened — now the most important film festival in the world. The Palme d'Or, the festival's top award, has recognised works by Bergman, Visconti, Coppola, Tarantino, Haneke and other great filmmakers. Cannes has been since 1946 the global showcase for art-house cinema and a barometer of the cultural and political debates of each era.
